6 Common Summer Diseases and How to Prevent Them

Summer is again the time to enjoy the great outdoors. It is the perfect time to go to the beach or pool, organize picnic, and do all sorts of things. Summer is a beautiful season. However, there is one drawback to it: summer diseases and illnesses.

summer sickThere are several types of illnesses that are very common during summer. It would be good to know them so that you could take extra precaution to avoid them.

1. Heat Stroke

When you are directly exposed to summer heat for a long time, you will be prone to heat stroke. Heat stroke is one of the summer diseases that can be fatal if not detected and treated immediately. Symptoms include high pulse rate, high body temperature, and difficulty in breathing. You can prevent heat stroke if you avoid prolonged exposure to the sun especially when it is at its peak in the middle of the day.  Also, drink more water to keep yourself hydrated.

2. Sunburn

Summer can be the perfect time to get a nice tan but if you are not careful enough, you could suffer sunburn. Sunburn is a summer disease that is also associated to direct exposure to the sun and it is common among children and adults. Sunburn can cause the skin to become reddish. And in extreme cases, a person could also experience dizziness and fatigue. To protect yourself, always apply sunscreen whenever you go out of the house and when you go to the beach or wherever exposure to the sun cannot be avoided.  It will also help if you wear sunglasses and hats when you are outdoors.  If your skin gets burned, apply Aloe Vera gel in the affected area because it is anti-inflammatory property.

3. Eye Damage

Sore eyes, sunburn of the eye, and snow blindness are common summer diseases that affect the eyes. To avoid eye problems, always wear sunglasses with UV protection. Avoid staring straight at the sun as well.

4. Prickly Heat

Prickly heat is also one of the summer diseases that are more common among children although it can also affect adults. Prickly heat is caused by heat and humidity. It causes red rashes that can be itchy. To relieve prickly heat, apply cornstarch on the affected area. Try to stay also in a cooler room or area.

5. Diarrhea

Diarrhea is also among the common summer diseases because heat causes food to easily spoil in the summer. You can avoid diarrhea by making sure you are not eating spoilt or contaminated food. If you are not sure, don’t eat it at all.  Eating contaminated food could also lead to food poisoning.

6. Bug Bites

Bug bites are common in the summer because ants, mosquitos, and ticks thrive during this time of the year. And if you are constantly outdoors, you are prone to them. So if you are going to a camp trip or anywhere that exposes you to these insects, be sure to apply insect repellant and prefer the organic ones.
