Choosing the Right Paint Color For Your Home

Part of house decorating is choosing the color of paint that you should use for each area of your room. This task can be really challenging especially that there are a lot of color choices available. But it’s also very rewarding once you find the right combination of colors and you see the final result.

Paint colors set the tone or mood of a room. If you get the wrong combination of colors for a certain room, the result could be disastrous. To avoid this, here are some helpful tips on how to choose paint color:

1. Decide what kind of mood you like to set in a particular room

Before taking your first step in choosing a paint color, you must first decide what kind of mood you like to set in a particular room. Do you like your room to look cozy, warm, intimate, bigger, smaller, and so on? Your choice of paint color will largely depend on this initial decision.

2. Warm and cool colors

First and most important in picking the paint color is to familiarize the two basic color groups: warm and cool colors and know the difference between the two.

Warm colors will remind you of heat or sunlight; they can stimulate the feelings of warmth and intimacy. Warm colors can make a larger room appear smaller and cozier. Examples of warm colors are orange, pink, red, yellow and black. These colors work well in social rooms like the dining room, living room, and even the kitchen.

Cool colors, on the other hand, like shades of blue, shades of green, violet, light purple and white have a calming and soothing effect and will remind you of sky and water. If you like a smaller room to appear larger and spacious, cool colors are a perfect choice. These colors are perfect for private rooms as well as smaller rooms such as nursery, bedrooms and powder room.

3. Pick your Dominant Color

Regardless of which room you are painting, you should pick one dominant color coupled with accent colors. Your dominant color should reflect what kind of mood you like to set in that particular room. If you like to make the room appear cozier, then choose any warm color as your dominant color. To make your room to appear more expansive, choose a cool color.

Once you have chosen your dominant color, be consistent with your choice. You should have one predominant color in a room, either predominantly warm or predominantly cool colors, taking into consideration the color of other major components in the room such as the flooring, furniture, carpeting, and so on. So if you decide to have predominantly warm colors in the room, make sure your choice of paint color for your walls as well as the color of other major components are also warm colors. You can’t have a warm paint color for your wall when your flooring and furniture have cool colors.

4. Create a balance and contrast

In painting a room, balance and contrast are very important. It means that if you have a warm color as a dominant color, you can add several minor elements with cool colors and vice versa.

5. Neutral Colors

Neutral colors as the name implies, they are neutral with no evidence of any strong color. Brown and gray belong to this category. Although they are not very stimulating in their own right, if you experiment using these colors along with one dominant warm or cool colors, you can get an astounding result.

Your choice of paint color will largely affect the appearance and the mood of your room. This is a very important decision you have to make in house-decorating. With the tips and pointers mentioned above, choosing your paint color will now be easier and more enjoyable.
